Urban Regeneration

Fanshawe Road

KMC Transport Planning advised on the transport and access strategy for the redevelopment of Fanshawe Road, Cambridge, where 84 new homes and extensive landscaped public space are being delivered by Cambridge Investment Partnership.

The scheme replaces three outdated residential blocks with a mix of high-quality flats and houses, over half of which will be affordable and built to exemplary sustainability standards. Our role centred on ensuring that the new development is seamlessly integrated with its surroundings, with transport and connectivity measures central to the design.

A key success was the reconfiguration of open space to create new pedestrian and cycle links between Fanshawe Road and Coleridge Recreation Ground. This improves permeability across the site, provides a safe and attractive route for everyday journeys, and strengthens access to local amenities. We also advised on reduced car parking provision, reflecting the site’s sustainable location and strong potential for walking, cycling and public transport use.

Other transport elements included improved access to the neighbouring allotments, provision for cycle storage, and ensuring high standards of accessibility throughout the site. By embedding active travel at the heart of the scheme, the development supports wider city objectives around sustainability and low-carbon living.

Through close collaboration with the design team and early engagement with the local authority, we helped to ensure that transport matters were fully resolved, supporting the grant of planning permission for this important regeneration project.
