Urban Regeneration

The KMC Transport Planning team are proud to be acting as transport advisor to Cambridge Investment Partnership on the regeneration of East Barnwell, a significant neighbourhood close to Cambridge Airport.
Our role has included providing transport advice throughout the design and pre-application process, supporting the preparation and submission of the planning application, and advising on how the development integrates with the wider transport network.
The proposals include a new community centre, library, pre-school, and replacement retail/café/commercial space, together with accessible public open spaces and 120 new high-quality homes, all of which will be affordable and benchmarked against Passivhaus standards. The redevelopment is designed to revitalise the local centre, enhance community facilities, and deliver sustainable, inclusive housing.
Transport planning for the scheme has been closely aligned with the Greater Cambridge Partnership’s Eastern Access Project, ensuring that improvements to Newmarket Road and Barnwell Road are embedded into the regeneration proposals. KMC have worked to maximise connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists, reduce reliance on private car use, and create a development that supports long-term sustainable travel choices.
This collaborative approach is helping to shape a scheme that not only delivers much-needed new housing and facilities but also sets a strong precedent for community-focused, sustainable neighbourhood regeneration in Cambridge.
